Getting Started With Bike Touring

There’s no better way of witnessing the beauty of a spectacular sight than from the saddle of your favourite bike. It’s a lot faster than walking and a lot more immersive than a speedy car ride. You feel every element as it combines to form the giant picture, be it the crashing ocean, wild flower fields, or the red rock canyons.

Bike Touring

That said, one prerequisite of getting started with bike touring is grabbing one of the best 24 inch bikes.

Once you have one, you’re all set to begin your tour!

Where Do You Intend to Go?

Planning to go to an exotic place you’ve never been to before?  Or perhaps a place where no one speaks your language? It may be in your best interests to find a guide. For your first few trips, we suggest that you keep it strictly local.

A bike tour doesn’t have to be challenging and long; it’s supposed to be fun! Start riding from your house to a hotel 10 miles away, spend the night, and you’ve just completed your first tour! When you start local, you’ll quickly familiarise yourself with hurdles you may face (ability, equipment, navigation, etc.).

Can Anyone Go On a Bicycle Tour?

In almost every instance: yes!

A bicycle tour is something almost anyone can take part in. It doesn’t matter if you’re young, old, poor, rich, a man, a woman or a child. Even if you haven’t ridden a bicycle before, you can still go bike touring after basic coaching.

How Much Gear Should You Carry?

This is a tough one.

If you’re going just with your friends, you’ll have to take everything. Namely:

  •         Rain gear,
  •         Camping gear, and
  •         Bike repair tools

All of this stuff will require sufficient panniers and packs, and it’s also going to be a trip that demands extra preparation since you’ll be riding with perhaps one-quarter of your body’s weight. However, if you want to lessen the load on your shoulders, you can perhaps try “credit card touring.”

This means you only carry what you need for the ride and buy everything else on the way. But if you want to carry nothing, consider going on a supported bike tour.

What Are You Prioritising?

Before you decide to go on a bike tour, you should get your priorities straight. Some people decide to focus on low mileage, so they devote more time to absorbing their surroundings. On the other hand, some people take part in the experience for the joy of cycling and choose to stay on the best flat bar road bike for the better part of the day.

However, there are also culinary tours in which eating food has a major role. All types of bike tours can be wonderful. It’s just a matter of time before you find the one you like and venture out.

The Bottom Line

If you haven’t felt the thrill of a bike tour before, seize the day and map the unmapped. The experience can be liberating when you feel your heart beating to the rhythm of the tires hitting the pavement.

Good luck!
