Staying Safe in New York City

New York City ranks in the top ten safest large cities in the United States, which has more than 8 million population. In the last decade, violent crimes in New York City have dropped by over 50%, however, when you’re visiting the city for the first time it is better to be aware of swindlers and thieves (which is quite common in many big cities). All these petty things shouldn’t scare you from visiting this vibrant city. New York’s famous tourist destinations are safe and well populated and I guess using common sense should keep you fairly safe in every city. Isn’t it?

One of my top tips for visiting New York City and the best way to stay safe is to be alert and aware of your surroundings. Almost all destinations of Manhattan are safe for walking in day time. You can avoid visiting the neighbourhoods like Harlem and Alphabet City after dark. However, the Times Square area is a great destination where you can freely hangout and it stays populated until after midnight.

Few important safety tips for first time visitors in New York City are:

  • Try not to draw attention to yourself as a tourist. Ensure not to stand in a secluded street corners looking at maps and try to walk confidently, to avoid unwanted attention from criminals.
  • While travelling in crowded public transportation especially in subways, keep your wallet and other valuables in your front pocket, rather than the rear, and keep your handbag closed, hold it tightly in front of you.
  • It is better not to wear expensive jewellery and flaunt cameras or your smartphone in public.
  • Be cautious when using ATM’s and try not to carry too much cash as most places accept credit cards and you’ll find ATM booths everywhere.
  • If you have little knowledge where you are heading to, stick to main and populated street after dark.
  • In case you are lost somewhere always approach a police officer or a friendly store owner to understand the directions rather than asking from a stranger.
  • Don’t travel in unmarked taxi cabs, which are generally referred to as Gypsy Cabs. These taxi cabs are mostly non-metered, non-licensed and non-insured.
  • Most of the business neighborhoods/districts are desolate at night so keep this in mind when you decide to walk or book a cab to reach home.
  • Head straight to your hotel when arriving in New York City, so that you can get rid of your valuable luggage as quickly as possible.
  • During your stay in the New York holiday rental serviced apartments or hotels, (which are quite safe) when you hear a knock on the door, make sure to check before opening it. Keep your valuables inside the in-room safe. Remember- since housekeeping staff can open the door themselves its best to be cautious.

Keep in mind all these simple tips while planning a vacation in NYC. It’s better to be safe than sorry later. Following these useful tips, you can avoid running into trouble and enjoy your stay in this wonderful city.
