Niagara Falls for the Adventurous Traveler

For nearly 200 years, the Niagara Falls has attracted tourists. Early visitors had to be hardy and adventurous. For decades, there were no special viewing platforms or walkways. They had to pick their way across the rocks to get a good view and rely on a local with a rowing boat to get close to the falls.

Today, things have changed drastically. As you can see here you can even enjoy five-star accommodation that includes a great view of the waterfalls from your hotel room. This is a great once in a lifetime experience, which hundreds of people enjoy treating themselves to, every year. Many travelers are more than happy to do something like that and maybe go to one of the manmade viewing points to get their holiday snaps.

However, if you are a bit more adventurous you may want to see the falls in a different way. There are plenty of fast and furious experiences for you to enjoy in the area including many that involve the Falls themselves.

Into the spray

Niagara Falls

Most of the boat trips take you right up to the edge of the waterfalls. Of course, on the boat you are safe. Yet your heart races and all of your senses are heightened as you travel closer to that wall of powerful water. It is far more thrilling than you would expect.

If you do not particularly like boats, do not worry because you can still get very close to the waterfalls. The Journey Behind The Falls tour allows you to do this. You take an escalator down into a cave system, so you are literally behind the waterfalls. After a short walk, you emerge onto a walkway that takes you to within feet of the base of the actual waterfalls.

From above

Viewing the falls from above is also quite thrilling. If you are not keen on heights, a good solution is to head for Table Rock. From there, you get an almost bird´s eye view without having to leave terra firma. You can see the river as well as the falls. It is a vantage point that enables you to truly appreciate just how steep and majestic the Niagara Falls are. There is also a great welcome centre that includes a café area which also offers pretty good views.

Take a helicopter ride

At the time of writing this piece, there are two firms offering short helicopter trips that take you along the edge of the waterfalls. As you can imagine these trips are not cheap, but they get busy. So, if you want to do this, it is wise to pre-book.

Visit the Whirlpool Aero Car

Also on the Canadian side of the Falls is the Whirlpool Aero Car. It has been in operation since 1916, yet a lot of modern tourists have never heard of it. That is a shame because it is actually pretty exciting. You travel from one side of the river to the other, passing directly over the top of a huge whirlpool, as you do so. Unfortunately, this ride is not wheelchair accessible. There is only space for 35 standing passengers, so, during peak season, you should book in advance.

Nearby adventure attractions

The waterfalls are located in a State Park, so there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. There is a traditional adventure park, zip-lines, mountain bike trails and much more, but the one thing you must not miss is this trip
