The Future of Green Travel is Bright

Approximately 83% of travelers across the globe believe that sustainable travel is important, and the tourism industry is taking note, with a host of offerings enticing tourists who are keeping an eye on the economic, social, and environmental impacts caused by their activities. The events of 2020 and beyond have caused people to become more concerned about the environment and they are now looking into sustainable transport and accommodation options, also showing an interest in suppliers who prioritize sustainable packaging and energy and water savings. As for the future, it is bright indeed for the planet, with the following trends predicted to boom.

plane

All–Electric Passenger Airplanes

An electric airplane may sound like a dream at the present moment, yet in February 2022, the world’s first all-electric passenger aircraft prepared to take flight. Manufactured by the Israeli company, Eviation, it underwent testing at an airport close to Seattle recently, and Eviation’s CEO has announced that the plane, called Alice, will be undertaking its first flight in a matter of weeks. The plane can fly for around 60 minutes and takes half an hour to charge. The company predicts that this type of plane (which will fit up to 40 passengers) will be more common in around a decade’s time. Trains will also be greener, with companies like Brightline West in the US redefining train travel with zero-emission, fully electric trains that (thus far) remove three million cars from the road.

Luxury Eco Lodging

Nature travel has gained significant traction over the last couple of years, with many travelers finding lush landscapes close to home, without having to rely extensively on fuel-based transport to enjoy a relaxing weekend or vacation in the midst of majestic landscapes. However, high-end travelers want the best of both worlds—a minimal carbon footprint and the luxury of a sustainable lodge stay. A sustainable or eco lodge differs from standard green hotels or resort accommodations in that it is usually located in an unusual location (such as the middle of a rainforest or jungle, a small island, or a mountainside paradise). It is powered by 100% natural means, serves locally sourced produce, is designed with sustainable materials in mind, and offers guests perks such as the use of organic bed linens and towels.

Green Globe Destinations

It is sad to think that so many beautiful places are struggling with over-tourism. While tourism can provide an economic boost, it can also put undue pressure on local ecosystems and people. Just a few places that are overcrowded at certain times of the year are Angkor Wat (which now has a shortage of groundwater), the Galápagos (whose waters are threatened by inter-island traffic), and Machu Picchu (which is now on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger). Green Globe is a certification that officially recognizes destinations with a good tourism capacity. It has certified accommodations in Africa, Europe, America, Asia, and the Middle East.

Tourists across the globe have spoken. Sustainability is the zeitgeist of modern travel, thanks to the development of new electric means of transporting people (including electric planes and trains). Travelers are interested in supporting green resorts such as eco lodges, which allow them to experience the wonder of off-the-beaten-path nature escapes. Finally, those interested in international travel are choosing to visit destinations that are not struggling with the social and environmental effects of over-tourism.
