Why the Netherlands should be on your travel list

If you find yourself often dreaming about where to head next on your vacation destination bucket list, you might be surprised to learn that the Netherlands has so much more to offer than just Amsterdam.

There’s a breadth of history on offer to get lost in alongside the art, the culture, the stunning views and the unique beauty of the architecture. It’s also never been easier to reach as you can get there in just over an hour via plane, take a more leisurely trip by train or hop on a cruise from Southampton to the Netherlands to get lost in the beauty the country has to offer.

To underline why the Netherlands is such an ideal travel spot, here are a few of the top reasons to visit as soon as possible.

Amsterdam

The locals

Not only do many of the locals speak perfect English but you’ll find the locals to be some of the warmest and most accommodating people you’ve ever met. Given that it’s one of the world’s best countries as far as living standards are concerned, people are generally upbeat and friendly. It’s also one of the safest countries in Europe with a very low crime rate.

The food

If you’ve never tried a stroopwafel then you’re in for a treat. These syrup-stacked waffles are a national delicacy and are out of the world when paired with a good coffee or tea. The Netherlands is also famous for its variety of cheeses and fries as well as its seafood. The fermented Herring fish might not sound particularly appetizing but it’s a taste sensation once you acclimate to it!

The landscapes

Walking in the Netherlands is a joy because it’s such a flat country, but the landscape is so colourful and diverse. From the distinctive windmills to the endless fields of bold and brilliant flowers and stunning lakes, there are few who wouldn’t be blown away by the country’s sheer breadth of stunning vistas. Hiring a bike and taking in the countryside is an absolute must!

The theme parks

Yes, France might have Disneyland and Germany might have Europa Park but the Netherlands has Efteling, perhaps the most stunning and unique theme park in Europe. If you think you’ve seen everything Europe has to offer as far as thrill rides and intricate theming is concerned then think again!

The towns

If you care to venture outside the cities, the Netherlands boasts some of the quaintest and more charming towns and villages in Europe. Think colourful wooden houses, immense greenery and a complete lack of cars in some towns that can only be accessed by boat.

The beaches

Yes, the Netherlands has beaches. In fact, the Dutch coast boasts a range of beaches that might not put the Mediterranean to shame, but certainly the UK!
