How To Use Packing Cubes As A Traveling Wardrobe In A Sailing Boat

Long gone are the days when sailing was an exclusive activity to pirates, the super rich, or the hardcore adventures – today, you can embark on one of the most rewarding types of vacations and unleash your inner Christopher Columbus, all while packing your entire list essentials in a small bag.

Sailing through miles of dramatic coastlines as the pristine waters splash under your boat and the rugged mountains create tear-inducing backdrops is a once-in-a-life-time experience, the kind of trip you’ll be talking about to your grandkids, repeating the stories over and over again until they’re absolutely done with you.

It’s one of the most hassle-free ways of traveling, no hectic packing-and-unpacking, no long airport lines, attractions bombarded with tourists, running from one place to another or dealing with constant arrangements and booking.

When you sail, the sea is your playground on which you paint your own adventures, it’s a way to discover the far-flung corners in the world while seamlessly floating on the water.

The scorching sun, the sea breeze, the sweeping views; they all incite an unparalleled sense of tranquility, freedom and a oneness with nature. That feeling will hit you, as you’re sitting on your boat, sipping a cold drink, after a long, hectic day of sunbathing, and you will realize – this is life. This is it. The epitome of happiness.

Sailing is not easy though; it requires intent preparations and multiple precautions. Before you head off to sea, you need to keep in mind that you’ll have very little unlimited space for yourself and your luggage and you’ll have to plan accordingly. You not only need to make sure that you have everything you need before boarding, you also need to know what to take, and how to pack! Otherwise, the consequences might be expensive and difficult.

Packing List: The Absolute Essentials

I’ll say it now, and I’ll say it over and over again: You need to pack light. It’ll be ten times more convenient for you, you’ll save a lot of space (which you won’t have a lot of anyway) and you won’t even need most of the stuff you get…In case you don’t know, you’ll spend most of your days lounging in your swim-wear anyway! And you know, you can always pack light and look good!

Tip: Bring an appropriately sized bag, preferably one that can be huddled easily in a small space. A backpack or duffel bag both work great.

To cube or not to cube, that is the question.

My screams echo through the house as I sit on my suitcase trying to get it to close, I am late, I am stressed, and I am not letting go of my carefully chosen outfits. I mean, I do need those 35 tops I brought with me for this 3-day trip, right?! Right?!

We’ve all been there before, nonchalantly putting outfit after outfit in our suitcase until it doesn’t even remotely close and then stressing out. I’ve tried it all, vacuuming the clothes while they’re in a plastic bag (this did not end well, R.I.P to my favorite shirt that ended up inside the vacuum cleaner), I tried bringing the whole family to sit on the suitcase, I tried rolling, folding, and well…crying. Obviously, none of them worked.

If you’re going on a sailing trip, you need to pack light. But…you also need those 15 swimsuits you just bought right? Well, packing cubes, although not unheard of, will revolutionize the way you pack.

What are packing cubes?

Packing cubes are rectangular containers with zippers that come in all shapes and sizes. They are used to put your travel essentials, clothes, gadgets, and practically anything in, in an organized manner, saving you so much hassle!

There are so so many types of packing cubes in the market, but they all serve the same purpose: helping you pack smart and light. You can check out what packing cubes work for you here.

So…what are the advantages to using the packing cubes on your sailing trip?

Make the most of your space.

The packing cubes will allow you to pack as much as possible, all while saving as much space as possible. Your belongings will be compressed, and you’ll be able to easily use the entire full capacity of your suitcase so you don’t waste space.

I mean, it’s better than looking at this tiny little space in the corner and convincing yourself that you can fit an entire shoe in there (plot twist: you can’t.)

Stay Organized

If you saw my office at work, you would not believe me when I tell you that I am a neat freak (I really am, okay!). I love my clothes color coordinated and live my life by checklists and colorful sticky notes. So of course, if you’re anything like me,  you should revel in the options the packing cubes give you.

You can organize a bag for underwear, one for dirty laundry, one for pants, one for toiletries, or even outfit-organize them.

Minimize Wrinkles

Ah yes, you got that perfect outfit all ready and folded in your bag and it’s time to go out. You bring out your outfit and lo behold! Wrinkles!

Wrinkles are caused by the moving of the fabric back and forth along the walls of the suitcase, and packing cubes allow them to be compressed hence less wrinkles!

Make packing, repacking and unpacking easier.

See, I am the kind of person who packs a day before travelling and then unpacks months after. I just hate it – you are reminded of the oh-so-sweet travel memories, you have to do laundry and shudders you have to organize them!

Packing cubes make all of this easier, since you just have to move the cubes from one place to another – make the whole ordeal a peace of cake.

Storage

On your boat you probably won’t have a luxurious wardrobe sitting right in the middle, sailing the seas with you. You also won’t have space to throw your stuff out and live like a heathen; so packing cubes can be used as storage cubes where you can keep your stuff nice, clean and organized.

They are environmentally friendly

If you are sailing, then you’ve probably done your bit of research about the importance of keeping the environment healthy and clean – and packing cubes have the advantage of being environmentally friendly so you can use them with a healthy conscience.

They protect your belongings

You don’t have to be dealing with the dramatic scene of you huddled up over your passport/phone/documents/camera crying because someone just spilled red wine on them. All your belongings will be safe and sound and protected in packing cubes.

Here are some of the main essentials you need to make sure are with you on your trip:

  • Soft-soled shoes: You need to make sure you have comfortable shoes that won’t ruin the deck, and will ensure a grip on the floor so you don’t slip. Shoes with rubber soles would be the ideal option.
  • Clothes:
o Morning: Lightweight clothes are ideal, but remember you’re probably going to be spending the entirety of your time in a swimsuit, so get enough swimsuits, cover-ups, a few tanks tops and a few shorts.
o Night: It might get a little bit chilly in the evening, so it’s advisable to get a cardigan, and a pullover, along with long pants to keep you warm if needed.
  • Sun Protection: You need all types of sun protection with you. Get the strongest SPF suntan lotion you can find, get your widest brim hat (or baseball caps), and get enough cover ups. You will regret not doing so when you’re sunburnt and can’t avoid the scorching sun for days on end.
  • Underwear: Get bras and underwear (one for each day). Remember, you’ll probably have no time for laundry and if you do, it would just look weird hanging your underwear outside for the world to see.
  • Toiletries: Make sure you only pack the basics and put them in travel size bags.
    o Toothpaste + Toothbrush
    o Motion sickness meds
    o Shampoo and conditioner.
    o Mosquito repellent.
o Skin moisturizer and sun protection.
    o Razors.
  • Towels – Try to get a towel that dries fast enough because you will be using them quite regularly and there’s honestly nothing worse than drying yourself with a wet towel.
  • Waterproof brag or Ziplocks. For all your important documents and electronics.

Just remember, it’s important to realize that you need to pack smart, not just pack light. You can bring the whole world with you and still miss out on the essentials and vice versa, and it’s vital for you to check the weather conditions before sailing so you can plan accordingly.

Packing Cubes + Sailing = The Perfect Combo!

With packing cubes you’ll have absolutely no hassle in packing, unpacking, storage or repacking. You’ll instead, save your time and energy on planning for your kickass sailing trip – your most memorable experience to come!
